Rant post -

Wednesday, riding home from work in the rain and into a strong headwind... geeez this feels nice and hard all of a sudden....
A lovely tek screw sticking out of my front tyre sidewall... nice wet tyre change.. :(

Thursday night, riding home in the rain. pssshhhh - sliver of glass straight through my rear conti GP4000S.

Today, go for a nice beach ride in the sun... after 41km... sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh

AARRRRGH! ANOTHER bit of BLOODY GLASS sticking out of my rear tyre!!!!!!

I'm spending more money on tubes this week than I ever spent on parking and petrol!

Im thinking I might have to take the penalty and ditch the GP4000S's for some gatorskins or similar as this is just doing my head in!!!

Keep the GP4000S, what tubes you running on?

I originally started out with Conti race tubes - but at $20 a pop it's a bit expensive when you get punctures (although have never had a front puncture yet on the roadie - so got to be happy about that).

Just running basic tioga tubes now. I did switch back to the conti once when I had a puncture - turns out I pinched it as putting the tyre on and soon after changing it, the tube burst, popping the tyre off the rim, lol. Went back the tiogas again after that :)

Mike Andy, we discussed this very topic this morning whilst one of the group repaired as puncture. I know most of our group ride with Conti tyres but they do seem to puncture very easily. The Vittorio Rubhino (sp) riders seemed happy with their tyres. i reckon I'll change next time and see if it makes a difference.

Rubino's are great when fresh as I had em on the Kona, once they start to wear off that's where trouble starts

I must admit after our ride up Lofty 2 weeks ago where Pat had 4 and I had 2 punctures we both run GP4000s I was seriously thinking it is the tyre, My tyres are 4 months old and around 1500km.  I had a sliver of rock go through the tyre today.

maybe invest in winter tyres ( gator skins )  and summer tyres ( GP4000S )

What's the mileage on the current GP4000S as they do get prone to punctures once the wear indicator dots wear off

Had Vittorio Pro for less that 3000kms and are not holding up. 6 flats in the last 2 weeks, 2 from remains of glass, other just from wear. Have got Gatorskins to fit tomorrow to see how they go.

After catching my tube starting to bulge through a small split I my 4000s at the start of winter I took the opportunity to buy some Gatorskins. They are a bit harder but no punctures. I didn't really get any punctures with the GPs but I thought I may as well switch for winter while I was ahead.

I've got both, Conti GP4000S on the roadie and Vittoria Randoneurs on the urban/commuter thing and I stay relatively puncture free. The randoneurs have survived a couple of weeks of Marion Rd in this crappy weather which tends to wash up all the glass, tacks and sharp things that live in the bike lane. Previously, I'd had similar nightmares to you, 5 punctures in three rides and finally threw in the towel and swapped a set of Maxxis off the urban bike for the Randoneurs.

I've been tempted to give the councils a ring and tell them to clean up the bike lanes in town, they're an absolute disgrace at the moment. If they want more people to ride to work, they need to address this. And as for the idiots who put the glass in the bike lane in the first place, you probably don't want to hear what I think of them...

Phil, Transport, DPTI, are responsible for bicycle lanes on arterial roads like Marion Road. Contact Traffic Hazards, Transport, by email DPTI.EnquiriesAdministrator@sa.gov.au If an urgent hazard (includes broken glass), phone 1800 018 313 (24-hr).

I use gp4000's in good weather no probs but have a commuter set up with conti gatorskins, really like them as they roll and grip pretty good and have excellent puncture protection

That's 3 in a row - you'll be safe for ages now ;-p
