Not to pass judgement or blame on the incident itself (without details) but it was dark, the lycra-clad cyclist did not have lights, was not wearing a helmet, and had earphones on...  Surely there is some potential safety mitigation there straight away...

Exactly, it was more important to be cool.

I feel for the family and friends and all involved but sadly I see many such riders and it just makes me cringe.

On our tuesday night ride we used to get a guy that always had his Ipod on and after a few weeks of being told to turn it off in group rides he finally got it as no one wanting to ride with him. He has since moved on, probably still riding with music blaring.

the mind boggles, but WHY no Helmet !

I get told all the time that helmets infringe on rights and civil liberties. I guess they must get filthy about putting seat belts on as well.

Helmets dont minimise head trauma..

At least thats what some people say! lol!

I had an engineer mate tell me 'Im NOT convinced helmets actually work...' I said 'how about you head butt the tarmac with and with out a helmet and get back to me...'

He said 'oh thats too basic Harley, I need some hard data being an engineer and all..'

I just got back from 3 days in Melbourne, I would like to see the per head of capita stats of cyclists in Melbourne, the place is fair crawling with cyclists. I was totally blown away with the shear volume of bikes on the road at any time of day. As to the accident, no helmet, no lights and running a red or amber light....?? Case closed.

A tragedy! I really feel for her family. An ABC news article quotes police as saying "...half of all cyclists killed on Victorian roads last year were not wearing helmets." Please everybody, wear a helmet, use lights, don't run red lights, stay behind the stop line and don't have earphones when you ride. Please!

+1

While it's sad the alarming part of the article was this para:

Mr Bentley said paramedics were called to three other accidents this morning involving cyclists falling from their bikes.

My brother lives about five minutes from that intersection and I've been through there a number of times.

The intersection is traffic light controlled, so (based on the evidence presented in the news report) either the cyclist or the car has run a red light... or at the very least, yellow.

Melton Hwy is a long, straight and wide stretch of road that makes it ripe for violations of the speed limit.

But really, why on earth be riding in the early morning without lights and with earphones in? Whether a helmet would have saved her is debatable.

Ah... the original report has been up dated... it appears the cyclist did run a red light...

... although that's yet to be fully established...

you say the cyclist ran a red light??

Okay, I get that some of our fellow cyclists will "squeeze the lemon" occasionally, just as motorists do, but if this is true and the person was ran a red light, riding sans helmet and with a portable music device on, then, the only comment I can think of is they must have had a death wish. Its all very well for us to regularly bang on about tin-tops not looking out for us on the roads, but we really have to do everything in our power as cyclists to look after ourselves, lights, bright clothing, helmets, no iPods, obey traffic lights etc our lives depend upon it FFS. looks like another preventable death on our roads:( so sad for the family. Call mer harsh, but I'm struggling to feel anything other than anger at the rider though.
