Ride Summary:

“And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” (Abraham Lincoln). A most appropriate quote to reflect on today as 54 riders arrived to ride the two Gawler Wheelers events.

Pete and Nick kick-started their birthdays today with a GW ride; and Wilson who had his birthday during the week joined the boys to pump more “life” into the day. Happy birthday guys!

Then during the ride-brief there was a loud shout from the crowd….”Lil’s here”. Lil is a Gawler legend and joined us for her first GW ride. She is 88 years old and just loves riding her bike. Yes…it’s not the years that count…it’s the life in your years.

19 of the group elected to ride the brand new extreme hills route that Nick submitted and it was action packed all the way. They encountered rain, fog and sunshine. Dale had two tyre blow-outs and then they lost Ray somehow! When asked “how many hills were on the route?” the common answer was “way too many!” A very challenging hills ride that required stamina by the ton! Toward the end of the extreme hill ride they were not referring to Nick as “birthday boy”…more like... “Nick the bast*rd”.

The other 35 riders participated in the easier flat ride to Two Wells & Virginia. It was a real blast with fantastic wind assisted legs that led to average speeds of 40km for some. The beauty of this ride was that it suited riders of wide ability and experience. The many stops along the way enabled the slower riders to catch up and provided plenty of time to chat and make new friends.

GW was honoured again with several riders joining us for the first time. We welcomed the newbies with a big round of applause and they included Carmen, Chris, Chewie and Ken.

Today’s riders will post more detail about their ride experience so please keep checking in to this discussion.

NEXT WEEK: We will be holding one big sensational ride through the exquisite Barossa Valley. YOU are more than welcome! Details will be posted on AC Events. Come along, join in the fun and remember that it’s all about the “life in your years”. Today’s ride photo's from the GW Paparazzi follow:

Not yet, Pete. I might try in a few minutes. However, I've had a couple few glasses of vino with dinner and my concentration is poor.  If joining Strava requires some thinking, I may give up quickly!  Wait a sec...I feel...zzzzzzzzz

Joined Strava last night, Pete.

Uhuh - we've all been watching you

;)

There's no hiding now!

At least we will have a nice gossip session

=D

As always, it was another fabulous ride with the Gawler Wheelers on Saturday.

It was a real treat to have Chewie out to ride with us – my tall and gentle friend always brightens my rides.  What more, it’s impossible to keep up with him so having Chewie on the flat ride provided just that bit more incentive to push myself and I had so much fun.  I recorded my fastest average speed for a GW ride (29.9kph – rather proud of that but also spewing because I hoped I’d clear 30kph). I think it’s almost time for me to believe you guys that I am getting better at this riding thing. I was genuinely surprised to have two comments made that I’m a strong rider… I suspect I was a bit dismissive at the time (Sorry Andrew [I think it was Andrew] and Kirsten) but the comments have sunk in and I’m starting to wonder if that’s actually possible!  I’m thoroughly enjoying my journey into cycling but would never have imagined that after only 3 months of consistent riding, I’d be complimented like that!  I’ve still got a very long way to go and I hope to never hit the point where I can stop improving, but I still see myself as a complete novice so this has really given me a buzz – thank you!  (And obviously, huge thanks to everyone at Gawler Wheelers who keeps encouraging me; my riding ability is purely a result of my GW attendance).

In the coming weeks, I’m going to look at ways to increase the kms I ride on a Saturday so may begin riding to Jaspers from a friend’s place in Elizabeth. I keep meaning to head out to the Barossa and ride further after GW but sitting at Jaspers with a coffee tends to kill that resolve.

Has anyone heard any further from Lil during the week?  I’m glad to read she came through her tumble ok. I had a chat with her just before her son took her to the doctors and she is an absolute darling (her son was making a quick call on his phone and I didn’t want Lil dozing in the warmth of the car if she had a concussion) - I’m utterly in love with her and hope she makes it out to some more of our rides.

See you all on Saturday!

Hi Juz.  Lil just came in to buy a new helmet as she cracked hers in the fall. She spent around 4 hours in hospital for observation but she's all good now.  On asking her when she might ride again her reply was "now, I'm riding with the Grenville Centre ride this morning, that's why I'm buying the helmet"  Only hope I'm in as good shape when I'm 80 odd.

Oh wow, I love her!  What an inspirational woman!

Thanks for passing this info on Gary. It's so good to hear she's got no hesitations hopping back on her bike.

Hey Juz,

If you want a riding buddy I usually pass through Elizabeth around 6:30, then ride past Star Cycles and down Peachy Rd and Coventry Rd.

I will definitely keep that in mind Mark. It won't be this week, but subsequent weeks look very likely - we'll talk on Saturday :)
