I saw the news item on Channel 7, and posted their web news as a comment at Prospect BUG. The verbal news mentioned a group of cyclists and blinding sun, which was not included in the written news.
On Monday at the Prospect Foodland, an assistant said that another customer had witnessed the carnage, and that more cyclists were involved than the 3 hospitalised.
I emailed Prospect BUG cyclists with the bad news.
More importantly, I emailed the messenger newspaper and got a response. Part of my attempt at driver education. Will the journalist follow up?
Last September a cyclist was injured when he was unable to cycle in the Prospect Road bicycle lane due to the persistent illegal parking. I contacted the messenger who wrote the story. Unfortunately the illegal parking in the bicycle lane continues.
This is a rather late response to the question posed. There were 6 cyclist in the group and we are members of Trikings Triathlon. Three of us were injured. Teigan Hall, prominent junior triathlete, Michael (Bluey) Beatty and myself Dave Checker. Bluey is still hospitalised and probably will be for another 2 weeks, I am still off work and may return within a week and Teigan has returned to school but still nursing injuries. It is now 6 weeks since the accident. We are all looking forward to getting back onto a bike but for some that may be a long time coming. When an accident such as this occurs it is not only the injured whom suffer but our three cycling buddies have had to endure the mental trauma of seeing their friends sprawled out across the intersection. Im sure the motorist is also having to cope with the trauma.
Sorry to hear about that Dave, thanks for sharing this. It puts a bit more of a 'human face' to crashes that are reported, but to which we sometimes do not know all the details of. I wish you all a speedy (and on-going) recovery and the best of luck getting back on the bike as soon as possible. Hope to see you at the Ride of Silence on May 22nd.
