In Rwanda, ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills’, the bicycle is essential to life. It is how you move. It is how you work. And during the Genocide, it is how you survived. Rising from Ashes is a feature length documentary about two worlds colliding. Filmed over six years across three continents, it follows the story of the growth of the newly formed Team Rwanda professional cycling team, under the direction of their coach, US cycling legend, Jock Boyer.

I really would like to see this. I don't think Wednesday night is so good but I'll work on it.

By the way, a member, Andrew Bunney, a broadcaster and film reviewer for 3D Radio, wrote this on my post about the film here.

Rising from Ashes is a feature length documentary about building a professional cycling team in post-genocide Rwanda. Rwanda previously had many bikes and also a strong competitive cycling culture. This tiny, beautiful, mountainous country is shown here in colourful, crisp images.

The film has a compelling cast of young African riders with traumatic pasts. All are survivors of the 1994 genocide when a million people were massacred in a three-month period. The film includes a brief outline of the circumstances, stemming largely from colonial crassness (Belgian, this time). The bloody results are quite graphically represented at one stage of the film, too.

However, Rising from Ashes is mostly an inspirational and uplifting bike-buddy, road movie. From ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills’ hills, these elite athletes switch adeptly from mountain bikes to road-racing (and back) and we watch their level rise over a six-year period including on a tour to the US.

The story is a heroic one against the odds and will appeal especially to cyclists or followers of African politics. For others though, it is a glimpse into both of these worlds through a carefully-told true story.
