Event Description

This event has been cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Thank you to all of you for your support and input along the way.

The Mod Squad are still braving the weather conditions and wish them luck.

A social afternoon/evening is still happening in Clare with the Mod Squad and some of us still staying in the Clare Hotel.

This is for those who want to ride to Clare but may not be up to 'The Mod Squads' speed over the full 140km.

This ride has similar requirements from riders as the Moderate group and is for those who can maintain 23-30km/hr average speed on the flat.

It will be ridden as a paceline and people must have bunch/paceline riding skills and understand signals used.

All riders will share lead rider duties.

Riders should have ridden a few 100+km rides, can change tyres/fix punctures, carry own tools and can comfortably make the full 140km.

For a rundown on Paceline/Bunch riding skills and signals please read the Guide from Cobwebs & BikeSA COBWEBS_Ride_Guide_2009.pdf (Thank you to Cobwebs & BikeSA for producing guide)

*Please arrive at Victoria Square no later than 7am.*

NB: RSVP for this ride will close Thursday 19/05/11 at 5pm so please finalise by this time.

This is due to accommodation needing to be booked by individuals as well as overnight bag drops on the Friday.

*Please make sure you have booked your accommodation in Clare.

*I have contacted Clare Hotel enquiring as to whether our bikes can be taken into our rooms and the answer to that is "Yes".

Contingency plan:

If the weather looks to be dreadful i.e. wet with gale winds, storms etc then the event may be cancelled.

Safety is my number one priority for all riders and do not wish to put anyone in harms way.

If it looks to be awful weather in Adelaide but clear out Gawler and beyond we can catch the train to Gawler and ride from there if needed.

Any suggestions or alternatives to this welcomed.

Sue, definitely wanted to give this trip a good hard poke. Dont get weekends off very often. I make a pretty good wind break......

Hey Rob,

Sorry to hear your cold has gotten the better of you and you won't be able to make it.

At this stage the weather is still the key factor, at the moment it is a big '?'

A final decision will be made by tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Personally for me I'm not too keen to ride into blasting headwinds as it will take me too long to get there and sunset is at 17:17 (5:17 pm for non-nurses) and I'm not too keen to get blown off my bike.

Let me know your thoughts and fingers crossed. :-)

Yeah it would have been a good weekend, to put that many k's on and not just looping around the city or to outer harbour

Well guys, with great regret i'm pulling out too, I'm still not the greatest and wont be better by the weekend, let alone strong enough to pull this off. Good luck and hope it goes well.

I'm planning to ride up with AVO, but I've been watching the comments here too. Because half the reason I'm going is because of the social side of things. Yep, riding in new country is always a buzz, but the chance to hang out with out with other crazy cyclists at the pub etc while we're there is going to be Gold. So it's been sad when people have had to drop out.

The forecast at the moment isn't great I'll admit, but I'm still red-hot to go. I shouldn't speak for AVO, but I think we both just want to enjoy a couple of days on the bike, whatever the weather brings. There's no pressure to smash ourselves or set a fast pace; just see how we go and enjoy the experience whatever it brings.

And if it rains, or blows up now and then, nyeh- all the better stories we'll have to tell friends and family later.  So, I'm still keen. Hope to see you there.

Hi all,

Thanks Sarah for you weather update. Yes, I have been keeping an eye on the weather for this weekend and everyday it is looking more undesirable, however at this stage I feel that I will keep the event going and see how it develops over the next few days.

Anyone else's thoughts welcome.

More updates soon.

I don't want to be the voice of doom but . . . . .

A friend pointed out that the weather forecasts are looking pretty marginal this weekend. I have had a look and saw that we will be riding into a steady 30 km/hr almost head wind  with gusts up to 60 km/hr on the Saturday :( Then this switches to a cross wind on Sunday. Does not sound like so much fun to me.  What are your thoughts?

OOPS, I meant Rob R not W... he's on night shift.

Thanks for all your commiserations. Just make sure you all have a great time to make up for me not being there.

If there's no coverage of the Giro, I'm happy to be your purveyor of who's where and what's happening...
