This is a training ride for those who are doing (or thinking of doing) the Three Peaks Challenge at Falls Creek, Victoria, in March.
I have laid out a map of 65.7km with 1,173m of climbing. I will be doing the loop three times, starting the first loop at 6.15am.
I expect to average around 23-24 km/h and so will regroup to start the second loop from the same place at exactly 9.15am, and (after having lunch somewhere near Burnside Village - suggestions welcome) start the third loop at exactly 12.30pm.
I would be happy to have some company on the ride for one or more of these loops.
It would be a good idea to bring energy bars with you, if you expect to do more than one loop! My aim is to log 200km for the day, and 3,500m of climbing. Anyone else up for all or part of the ride?

Comment by Shane Sody on January 12, 2013 at 17:11 There will be one more, two weeks after that, Rob - (all being well). I intend to schedule one more long-distance, high elevation ride for Sat 23rd Feb (after which I will be tapering for the Three Peaks.)
Comment by Rob (Chewbacca) on January 12, 2013 at 15:48 What an amazing effort by all you guys on your ride today. Kudos....
Noticed the next ride is 9th Feb :( Unfortunately my wife is springing me a birthday party on that day ....wish the sun, moon and stars would align better for me.

This will be short because I am totally stuffed after climbing more than 5,200 metres, in nearly 9 hours.
4 hardy souls set off at 6.15am - myself, snappy-don, Ricky, and Torsten. The weather was ideal - overcast, and cool, not cold. Fortunately both Ricky and me had both studied the route the night before so nobody got lost.
MapMyRide calculated the climb for each 65k loop at 1173m but that was way out. Two measurements during the ride had it at 1500m or 1600m per loop, and my Strava says it was even more than that.
After one 65k loop, Torsten headed home, and we were joined instead by Ben, who surprised the rest of us with his climbing strength. He had to wait for the rest of us at the top of a few hills - he's now just one place off KOM on one of our segments today.
Special mention must go to snappy-don who amazingly got through about 100k and more than 2,000 metres of climbing despite spraining his ankle last Wednesday. And Ricky kept us all entertained with stories of his riding in the French Alps and the Pyrenees.
After lunch, Ricky headed off to work, and Ben and I set off on the 3rd loop, but it ultimately proved too hard for both of us. Ben did over 100k and more than 2,600m climbing in one-and-a-half loops, so it was a great achievement. I struggled on alone for a while but I also cut the 3rd loop a bit short because I couldn't face doing Nicol Rd, Knotts Hill Rd and Pound Rd for a third time.
There will be another endurance climbing event two weeks after the TDU - Saturday 9th Feb. Watch adelaide.cyclists for details!
Comment by G Ward on January 11, 2013 at 21:27 Looking at your route, St Georges Bakehouse being at the end of each loop is a very convenient choice for something quick to refuel you, and their product is good (award winning too). The route looks interesting, just not sure about doing Knotts Hill and Pound Rd 3 times though !!
Comment by G Ward on January 11, 2013 at 21:17 Thanks for the invite today Shane, but slightly too short notice for me - if I'd known about it 2 days ago I would have juggled things to be able to do loops 2 and/or 3 (under normal circumstances I would have really appreciated being able to join a group at a more realistic time (after 9) than so many other groups, but the way I've planned tomorrow doesn't allow me to do it this time). I've been interested in doing the 3 Peaks but I acknowledge it needs a lot more preparation than I've done the last 2 years I've been back on the bike, but it's definitely on my bucket list. If you intend doing another run at this please let me know again.
Comment by Shane Sody on January 11, 2013 at 20:36 Thanks Ben - see you at 9.15 then.
Comment by Ben Dickson on January 11, 2013 at 20:34 Haven't been there recently, but the bakehouse was good the times I've been.
Shall join you for the second two loops.
Leave finally approved for March, so almost-definitely doing 3-Peaks \o/
Comment by Shane Sody on January 11, 2013 at 15:15 I am thinking maybe St George bakehouse on Portrush Road for lunch - after we finish the second loop about 12.10. Haven't been there but looks handy and could probably do with some carbs after 131k
