2012 Adelaide Cyclists magpie swoop map

Since 2009 Adelaide Cyclists has hosted a crowd sourced information map of swooping magpies. In 2012 it is easier to report with a new location reporting form(at the bottom of this page) or you can checkout locations near where you ride. Search the map for locations already reported or birds on your route. The Veloway, Norton Summit and Henley Beach Rd birds are well known!
The 2012 map is now closed for submissions. Most birds have settled down... until next year!

Comment by Adam Williss on September 17, 2012 at 12:52 They have you trapped Trent!
Comment by Trent on September 17, 2012 at 12:46 wow havent been down the cove road lately but was going to go that way tonight to avoid one that had a crack at me on Lonsdale highway between the shops and sports complex! sounds like a nasty one Adam!
Comment by Adam Williss on September 17, 2012 at 12:37 If you take the Sea to Vines path you will avoid it, so that is still an option for you. This one makes the Major look like a pet budgie!
Comment by Michelle Crick on September 17, 2012 at 11:06 ouch... I was going to head that way tomorrow to Glenelg to avoid "The Major" oh well!
Comment by Adam Williss on September 17, 2012 at 10:58 Just added 5 more swooping magpies!
You are generally right Michelle. That is the strategy I try. However, the magpie on Cove Rd at Hallett Cove (corner of Dutchman Dve) isn't worried about that. This magpie is on par with the bird at Brighton Station. It will peck and claw at your face while you are waving and shouting at it and riding fast down the hill. I've never feared for my life while riding my bike like I did yesterday with that thing! I'm worried it will hurt a little kid on a bmx.
Comment by Michelle Crick on September 14, 2012 at 16:48 I have found turning around and shouting at them means they don't swoop as close!
Got done by a kamakazi maggie on River Road Hahndorf. about 200m past the freeway bridge heading south. Not as nuts as the Norton legend swooper but had 2 good goes.
Comment by heather on September 7, 2012 at 16:56 1.Prospect, Nailsworth-Prospect, Thomas Street-Barker Road. Magpie swooping. Unlocking my bike from bike rack at 1 Thomas Street, Prospect Library, when a magpie swooped me once, then sat on roof next door at Nailsworth Primary School. I laughed at the magpie as it watched me while I prepared bike. When I started cycling, it started swooping properly, along the library frontage and some metres of Main North Road. The magpie left before I reached the pedestrian lights where I waited for a green light. Once I reached Barker Road, the magpie swooped me for a distance. The magpie's territory includes the school surrounds, so I fear that approval will be given to kill it (and thus its chicks will starve). Occurred on 7-Sep-2012. Reported to Adelaide Cyclists at http://www.adelaidecyclists.com/adelaide-magpie-cyclist-map.
Comment by Tim B on September 6, 2012 at 17:49 Hey Gus, I found it interesting that you said you got swooped more on Norton when descending, I reckon I've only been done twice going down, but dozens and dozens of times on the way up!
Comment by Gus K on September 6, 2012 at 16:29 Why do magpies swoop, 'Foul Swoops' a segment on ABC 891 afternoons with me and a bird specialist where she talks about why and I talk about the map and how there's nothing you can do in my opinion to avoid them.
Comment by Elaine Kuczmarski on September 2, 2012 at 18:37 Could not get Google map link as described above, would not work.
Comment by Gus K on September 2, 2012 at 13:44 I just read the comments. I need to keep a master spreadsheet and adding some locations is problematic. I will get them all sorted out.
Norm, I'll fix your markers when I get some time. Basically the more easy it us for the software to map the location the quicker it gets posted.
Thanks for all your reports.
Comment by Norm on August 21, 2012 at 17:58 Hello the manager of the magpie watch site. Where have all the markers gone? Blewett Springs Road "bluey" is disappeared as has the Marino Rock Railway station that some one put up as has the "Upper Pennys Hill Road" marker. Do you want them put back in? is there a problem? And how do I fix marker T is should be the same distance to the north of Glenthorne Path footbridge and not south. (my mistake sorry)
Comment by rossmg on August 21, 2012 at 0:49 The "What's Here" from the pop up has placed "W" on the exact location - "V" can go..
Comment by rossmg on August 20, 2012 at 19:36 Oh - found another method - right click on your location and choose "What's Here" from the pop up - the Lat/Long appears in the GoogleSearch bar :-)
Comment by rossmg on August 20, 2012 at 19:27 Yeah, wanna fix the Linden Ave/Cres marker as well - should have used Lat/Long but typed the address instead.
You can centre a location in Google Maps (ie: from a correctly placed address with a marker) and then paste
"javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));" (without quotes)
into the url and tap return on your key board though the newest FireFox seems to have broken that function - if it works you get a copy/pastable Lat/Long appear - nice.
Comment by Norm on August 20, 2012 at 17:45 The magpie on the Veloway just north of Glenthorne path that I put up yesterday and is on the wrong side of the bridge, should be north another 200 metres from where it currently is. How do I fix that?
Also he is very aggressive, almost knocked my glasses off tonight coming home, hit me from the east and dislodged the left side arm. Had to grab them to stop them falling off.
Comment by rossmg on August 20, 2012 at 12:05 Oh, it's put my marker on Linden Cres, not Linden Ave :-(
